Of Dreams and Nightmares: Some Quijotes, Many Dulcineas

31 October, 2017

Recently we embarked in a massive daydream of baseball games won which ended with nightmares of aspirations lost. Those feelings made me think of dreams. Ever since I was a child growing up in a country of Spanish traditions, the name of Don Quijote de la Mancha was very much a part of my literate world. Of course, the book, written by Don Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra, was no easy reading and it was not until I was in my teens that I had the time, patience, opportunity or school requirement to make me assimilate it. Affectivity in personal life

31 October, 2017

Affectivity means the subjective totality that acts, situations and relations are living with. It is gradually building up along the personal existence and is intimately entailed in biological, cognitive and intentional processes from which a unity is formed. To know -and love- action depends on the satisfaction of needs and tendencies and their integration in one’s own world. Sometimes, we express it saying: “what is loving is effective”, and also with “to have a heart” (in its double meaning of fondness and bravery). Read the rest of this entry »

Authority as a service

28 October, 2017

The exercise of authority has always been an unfinished debate both in the sphere of society and those of family and school contexts.

We can differentiate a number of successive phases in exercising authority: thinking, informing, deciding, communicating clearly the norms of behavior and enforcing them. When parents order something must think why they do it: because of sobriety or in order not to complicate their life? to create peace or for convenience? Parents have to make good decisions by means of punishment and reward. Read the rest of this entry »

HATRED POLLUTION

28 October, 2017

Nowadays we are concerned about pollution, but it seems that we are only worried about that which directly damages our lungs or poisons our organism. And so it is strange that a contaminant permeating the environment we breathe and alienating a quite number of brains, moves around our society as an ordinary product, without being discredited even so dangerous as it is. We are talking about hatred. It is contagious, creates discord, inflames wishes, disturbs minds, darkens judgement, both of individuals and multitude. Hate finds ways to all kind of violence, pollutes interpersonal relations until making impossible the life itself. When it is spread in a collective range, causes havoc to millions of people: with policies aimed at blocking institutions, striking terror on the streets, triggering wars destroying nations, etc. If we reflect about the nature of hatred we can see its origin from a not mollified anger, which is driven essentially by irrationality.
